Frequently Asked Questions

I've never practiced Kendo before, can I join the club?
Absolutely, the club has a very strong beginners programme. No prior experience is necessary. Please send us a message through the contact form so we can arrange for you to come down to our beginners' class on Sunday mornings in Marino Institute of Education. Please arrive at least five minutes early so we can register you correctly.

How much does it cost to train in Kendo?
Our beginner's class costs 70 Euro and this will cover your insurance for the calendar year and training fee during the 10 week beginner's course and the cost of you equipment. After your beginner's course is finished, the monthly fees are Euro 50 for adults, 25 fullt time students and 20 for children. This allows you to train Mondays, Tusedays, Wendsdays Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and when you move to armor, Wednesdays as well.

What kind of equipment do I need?
Initially you will not require any equipment. We will provide you with all necessary equipment to commence training Kendo. However, most students purchase their own shinai after a month or so. It is a personal choice when to buy a Kendo uniform. If you decide to continue with your Kendo training there is a potential to initially borrow a club bogu (armor) before you purchase your own set.

Can children practice Kendo?
Yes, in feudal Japan, children of the samurai class would wear twin swords and learn swordsmanship from the age of eight, and this is still considered the ideal age at which to begin Kendo. Dublin Kendo Kobukai has many years of experience in teaching and welcomes all children from the age of eight to join.

Can women practice Kendo?
Yes both sexes train in Kendo and together. While Kendo can appear highly aggressive due to the amount of noise Kendo make while training, it does not generally attract or retain those who wish to acquire street-fighting skills. Consequently the atmosphere in the dojo is at all times respectful towards every member and is welcoming to all. Our female members range from beginner level to Dan grades (Black belts).

Is Kendo dangerous?
Because Kendo is a full-contact martial art safety is our primary concern, Kendo has developed a number of safe-guards, such as effective body armor for protection and strictly-observed rules of behavior within in the dojo and its surrounding area. However, as in any physical activity, injuries may result from ordinary accidents such as trips, collisions or the worsening of existing physical issues. The continual monitoring of our members by our instructors, who have considerable experience ensures we have minimal issues.

Does the club sell all of the necessary equipment?
Yes. We have an agreement with an official supplier, who provides us with shinai, bokken, and uniforms and bogu. It is also may be possible to borrow armors through the club. If you wish to purchase armor or other kendo-related equipment it can also be done through the club secretary.

I have more questions. Who can I contact?
